Blessing the Wharenui

Today, O.I.S students witnessed a once in a lifetime opportunity. The blessing of the Wharenui carvings and Carver, Tim Codyre. The carvings of Kupe, the Tainui Waka and Guardians are being taken down and restored by Tim and selected students.

As part of Maori protocol, there is a requirement to bless the carvings to ward off spirits and protect Tim when he is working on them. We were very lucky to have Ko Matua Graham Smith bless the carvings and give a Mihi.
Leading the proceedings we had Whaea Grace and Whaea Rachel call a karanga to welcome our guests.

This is stage 2 of the restoration of the wharenui and we are all very excited to see the carvings being "brought back to life".
